about

Another one written while my mother was suffering from Alzheimer's. I meant it to be a tribute to her, I didn't mean to throw my dad under the bus on the bridge but he really told me that stuff when I was a kid. It was hard to watch the kindest, most loving person I'd ever known die in such a degrading way. It reinforced feelings that there is no divine intervention or justice in this world.

lyrics

i was born with a broken heart (words & music by salim nourallah)

let me take you to the desert
to my humble start
mom, she had a halo and a green Datsun car
dad, he was an Arab, and a playboy too
always at the office, always in a suit
yeah, Karen was a housewife
that struggle was real
clipping all the coupons, cooking all our meals

i was born with a broken heart

i wish i’d learned karate
or kung fu too
‘cause you can’t win with poetry when they’re bullying you
why were all the grownups looking so damn old?
hamburgers and donuts for doing as you’re told

i was born with a broken heart

i learned about the Bible, i learned about the Koran too
my father in denial that all my closest friends were Jews
when i asked him about heaven and if mom was going too
he said, “heaven’s no place for Christians and hell’s the place for you”
it all seemed so messed up to me, it all seemed so messed up
but he didn’t make that stuff up, it’s what they taught him it’s what we’re taught
always people pointing fingers if you’re not on their religion’s team

diesel Cadillacs
polyester slacks
the Shah of Iran
all my time spent combing through the record stacks
Lee Chagra got shot
Brad Austin had pot
played our first gig strip mall parking lot
shady politicians
heavy metal musicians
all the bad guys had mustaches flash track suits and Santana
drug cartels, k-mart, k-tel
disco compilations in the 8-track wishing well
equal rights for women?
boy, you gotta be kidding
put the bright ones on their knees, let them cook, clean and breed
that’s how it was in the 70’s
that’s how it was in the big, bad ‘70s
