about

I Missed My Own Life is the wise old man of SSOS. Written in February of 2008, just a few weeks before Everything Under the Sun, it's the oldest of the bunch. Just like EUTS, it didn't find a home on any of my previous records, not because a lack of quality, but because it never seemed to fit in. It's yet another song of mine that involves the struggle to simply be present. My son was 5 at the time that I wrote this, and I felt like as much as I tried, I was still missing so much. I was constantly distracted by the pressure and stress of trying to support a family as a self-employed musician. If my phone didn't ding, there was no money coming in. If my Dad had driven a single thing into me when I was a boy, it was that being a "good provider" was the number one prerequisite for calling yourself a decent father. I had a hard time disconnecting from that notion, so not only was I pushing myself over the edge to provide, but there was also a hefty amount of guilt attached to the proceedings. No matter how much I earned, I felt like it was never enough, and I was failing at the most important responsibility I had. As trying to make money became more and more important, the time for making my own music was being systematically squeezed out. Looking back now, the dogged determination I elicited in order to keep plugging away, playing shows and releasing my own records, was almost insane, especially considering I was spending money to make these records and never coming close to breaking even. Considering all of this, it's fitting that IMMOL is the grandfather of Somewhere South of Sane, a record that could not and would not exist if things hadn't played out the way they did.
