about

Is This Where the Trouble Begins? was written back in 2015 but was actually the last song completed for this record. I'd left it to languish on a hard-drive after I'd written it because I thought it was “too dark” and I couldn’t imagine anyone ever enjoying the way I shredded my vocal chords at the end. My 8-year-old daughter’s reaction effectively sums this up: ”Too much yelling, Daaaad!” But then I busted her singing along one day in the backseat of the car. I guess pure “enjoyment” isn’t the point of songs like this, though. When I started the painstaking process of working on the SSOS liner notes, I realized Trouble was a perfect candidate for inclusion. A grim, worrisome story is at the forefront of the lyric that tied nicely into the “mental chatter/struggle to be present” theme of this record. Its modal, repetitive guitar backbone also offered a nice opportunity for a psychedelic freak-out. It serves up the kind of story we often tell ourselves. A narrative that can take us from tranquility to anxiety-ridden frenzy in a matter of moments. And it all happens inside our own heads! After being in a fair share of relationships that had gone south, when something good came along I found myself wondering when the other shoe would drop. I found myself waiting for the trouble to begin, almost flinching at any moment that seemed to signify the beginning of the end. Isn't baggage so much fun?
