about

I made a voice memo recording of Let Go of the Night right after I’d written it in July 2012. It was five months before my now ex-wife would file for divorce the first of two times. I never intended for anyone but her to hear this song, yet I never actually worked up the nerve to play it for her. The voice memo remained the only rendition I had of it for four years. I kept circling back to it once I found myself in the midst of making Somewhere South of Sane. I thought that first performance was so perfect in its rawness and fragility that I would never be able to top it with a “real” recording. So I briefly considered putting the memo version of the song on the album. It was just too sonically disparate, though. So in order to try to preserve the feel, I recorded my acoustic guitar, which became the foundation of the “real” recording, alongside my performance from 2012. If you pay close attention, there is an ebb and flow to the track that cannot be achieved with a metronome or time keeping device!
