about

When my son was born in 2003 I decided that touring wasn't the path I wanted to pursue anymore. I didn't want to be gone all the time and miss seeing my kids grow up. So building a recording studio in our backyard seemed like a good idea, and it was a potential way to stay in music and stay close to home. After the great divorce, I found myself in a situation where I only had the kids a couple days a week and every other weekend. I adopted an always-in-motion game plan in order to not be morbidly sad whenever I didn't have them around. Touring suddenly made lots of sense again. I could go out and do short stints of shows whenever the kids weren’t with me. It was the perfect way to keep active. The idea for Moving Man came from something another divorced friend said to me around that time. She advised me to never sit still in the kid-less gaps: "look at the calendar in advance, assess the blocks of time when you don't have the kids and fill those blocks with whatever you can!" I took the advice and went full tilt with it. This led to the most musically productive period I've ever had but I often felt like I was running away from something. This song is a rumination on what I might've been/still am running from.
