While on a trip to Austin, where I was supposed to be writing songs for hire, I found myself in the grips of an all-nighter. I sat at an upright piano for hours and played Relief over and over again until I could barely keep my eyes open. It was pitch black outside, and I was the only person in this sprawling mansion I was staying at. In those slow hours approaching dawn I felt like I was in the epicenter of isolation. After I’d finished composing this song, I thought it was one of the most significant I'd ever written. It was not a song for hire, though. On October 27, 2014, Kyle Crusham arrived at the recording studio that lived one story below the piano I wrote this song on expecting to work on songs we were supposed to present to a publishing company in Nashville. I had much different designs that day. Instead we recorded Relief, just the two of us. What you hear in this recording was all done with Kyle that afternoon, even the mix.
