Over the course of 3 years I methodically grew SSOS like a garden I was tending to. The songs shuffled in, one by one, and my little song garden grew to the point of absurdity. I took my time. I never forced a single entry. With the exception of a couple of stragglers, the recording process that yielded the bulk of the record basically started in August of 2014. Robot is another I wrote in drop B tuning, just like the previous two songs on this side. I'd heard about the tuning in a Robyn Hitchcock interview on a great songwriting podcast I was obsessively listening to at the time. I ended up getting quite a few new songs out of simply listening to other songwriters talk about their process. Robot was the last song recorded for SSOS, in September of 2017. I got a kick out of recycling an ancient drum loop I'd made way back in 1998 for a song called Say You Belong. Funny that the loop is older than both my kids. Robot also led to me finally getting to play a bit of bass. There's really very little bass on this record, due to the lack of drums.
